Harry Potter accused 'lashed out after attack

Self-defence plea
Rob Knox Killer In Court

The alleged killer of Harry Potter actor Rob Knox said he had "no option" but to protect himself during a fight, a court heard yesterday.

Karl Bishop, 21, claimed he swung two knives in selfdefence as he was circled by a group of Rob's pals.

Bishop said Rob was "more aggressive" than the others and was being held back. He added: "I was just trying to get away. I was always going backwards and swinging and trying to keep people away from me.

"You wouldn't think people would run at someone who's got a knife. I didn't intend to wound anyone at all, but they attacked me.

"There was no other option. They ran at me.

"They had me surrounded. My aim was to scare people away and then as they kept running at me the knife was catching them."

Jobless Bishop, of Sidcup, Kent, is accused of murdering Rob, 18, outside a bar in the town.

He said he carried the two kitchen knives to "scare whoever was down there" because he was angry after being beaten up twice in two weeks, the jury heard.

Bishop said he pulled out the blades when Rob's brother Jamie, 17, ran towards him. He added: "I was regretting what I was doing, that it could have all gone wrong - and it did."

He claimed he was about to go home when he was surrounded by the group of mates and says he has no memory of injuring anyone.

The court has heard that Rob, who played Marcus Belby in The Half Blood Prince, was stabbed five times and died in hospital.

The attack last May happened just 13 months after Bishop was released from prison for slashing two youths in the face, the jury was told.

He denies murder and wounding five others.

The Old Bailey trial continues.
